A public-service professional with an MA (hons) degree and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business (Marketing), Grant Power has worked for government departments and ministries over the past 30 years. He is currently on the senior management team of Partnering for Outcomes (PfO) at Oranga Tamariki – the Ministry for Children.
Previously, Grant held roles at Housing New Zealand (now Kāinga Ora) and the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment, including when the ministry was known as the Department of Labour.
In 1994, he helped establish Rescare Homes Trust and subsequently became the inaugural chairman. By then, Grant had already acquired significant experience with disability sector environments. His younger brother Marc was a resident at the former Mangere Psychopaedic Hospital and, in the late 1980s, Grant joined the Welfare Association for Handicapped Children Mangere Hospital & St John's Home Inc., becoming Chairman in 1989.
In the early 1990s, he was appointed a Trustee for the Auckland Home Options Trust. He also managed the delivery of services for the Service for People with an Intellectual Disability (SPID) homes, a division of the then-Auckland Area Health Board and now known as Spectrum Care.
“I believe there is more than one way of integrating people with an intellectual disability into the wider community. Over the past 25 years, Rescare has proven that the ‘lifestyle community’ concept works because it provides residents and staff with an environment that is genuinely enabling.”
